Steam Turbine Condensers: Steam…Water…Easy…Right?

Condensers are fitted to the exhaust of steam turbines to create vacuum and convert the exhaust steam into liquid condensate.  Water-cooled condensers are superficially similar to ordinary shell and tube heat exchangers, but in reality contain many specialised features.  Understanding the purpose of these features is critical to understanding design and operation.

The software packages typically used to model shell and tube heat exchangers should be avoided when considering steam turbine condensers.  A generalised shell and tube heat exchanger model is not well-aligned with this type of heat exchanger and the required heat transfer calculations are, in any case, exceedingly simple.

This webinar will identify the key issues in turbine condenser design, including:

  •  Tube material selection
  • Cooling water velocity
  • Fouling allowances
  • Air removal
  • Tube vibration
  • Impingement protection

Consideration will be given to the re-tubing and refurbishment of existing condensers, as well as new designs.
